A burning body has been found on a street in suburban Brisbane in a horrific case of self-harm.

Police were called to Rome Street in Yeronga, south of the city, at about 6.30am following reports a body had been found.

It is understood the body was alight at the time.

A crime scene has been set up and a police investigation is underway.

Regional Duty Officer Inspector Laurie Shevlin said the body was found near a river on a vacant block, and was visible to passers-by.

‘Police were called to quite a gruesome scene where an unidentified person was found what’s appeared to be deceased down by the river on a vacant block,’ Inspector Shevlin told The Courier Mail.

‘It’s obviously quite a tragic time for the families.

‘First responders are always confronted with traumatic situations, some worse than others.’
