A man with alleged ties to a bikie gang has been arrested while allegedly trying to smuggle guns, meth and $370,000 on a commercial domestic flight.

The 41-year-old man from Sydney‘s Dolls Point was attempting to board a flight from Brisbane to Sydney on April 19 with false identification when airport security identified the contraband in his luggage.

It is alleged the man then fled the airport on foot when security attempted to question him, avoiding capture until April 26.

An investigation by the AFP-led Anti-Gangs Squad were able to track the allegedly patched member of the Hells Angels outlaw motorcycle gang to a block of units in Dolls Point in Sydney’s south.

Images released by the Australian Federal Police show the cash in $100, $50 and $20 denominations alongside two handguns, ammunition and 5g of methamphetamine.

He appeared in Sutherland Local Court on Friday, charged with nine offences including four counts of attempting to bring dangerous goods on an aircraft.

He was also charged with two counts of cross border firearm trafficking and one count each of drug possession, using false identification at an airport and recklessly dealing with proceeds of an indictable crime.

The maximum penalty for these crimes would result in 20 years’ imprisonment.

Police allege the man used fake identification when attempting to check in $370,000 in cash, two handguns, ammunition and 5g of methamphetamines on a flight from Brisbane to Sydney

AFP Detective Superintendent, Adrian Telfer, reiterated the potential harm that is posed to communities by misused firearms trafficked by criminal networks.

‘Removing firearms from the community is a vital step in keeping everyone safe from the potential impacts of the harmful and illegal use of these weapons,’ he said.

The AFP are planning to extradite the man to Queensland where he will face further state charges.

He is next due to appear in court on 20 June, 2023.
