Nigerian singer Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe, better known as Ayra Starr, has revealed her preference for Ghanaian jollof rice over its Nigerian counterpart.

This disclosure has fueled the ongoing social media debate about which West African makes the best jollof rice, with fans from Ghana and Nigeria passionately defending their favourites.

In a recent appearance on BET Amplified, Ayra Starr explained that she enjoys Ghanaian jollof rice for its garnishing.

She noted the cultural differences surrounding the dish in each country, highlighting how Nigerian jollof, often referred to as “party rice,” is a staple at celebrations.

She said, “Ghanaian jollof. I mean, they are both really amazing. I grew up with Nigerian jollof rice. It’s usually cooked in a big pot outside, which gives it that smoky flavor.

“That’s what makes it ‘smoky jollof rice.’ In contrast, Ghanaian jollof rice incorporates more ingredients, while Nigerian jollof typically keeps the protein and vegetables separate. So, it’s really two different vibes.”
