Australia’s biggest brewery evacuated after fumes detected at Gold Coast worksite

Carlton & United Breweries’ Gold Coast brewery had an emergency evacuation after reports of ‘stinging eyes’ led to fears of chemical fumes.

More than 100 staff were evacuated from the Yatala site, in the city’s north, at about 7am on Thursday after staff began complaining about a strange ‘odour’.

Queensland Ambulance Service and Queensland Fire and Emergency Services attended the scene following ‘a report of fumes’.

One male worker was taken to Logan Hospital in a stable condition and another was assessed by paramedics at the scene.

Fire crews at the brewery, which is the biggest in Australia, conducted atmospheric testing for possible chemical fumes.

‘About 7am, the Yatala brewery was evacuated following workers complaining of stinging eyes and an odour,’ a CUB spokesperson told 7News.

‘Despite some of our employees suffering sore eyes, and some having received treatment, they are now safe and well.’

CUB said the ‘source of the problem’ is still under investigation.

‘We are unable to confirm at this time whether the issue has emanated from our site,’ it said.

‘Brewery operations will recommence after QFES has given the all clear.’
