Asamoah Gyan has always been an NPP member, that’s why he missed the penalty

The General Overseer of Heaven’s Gate Ministries, Nicholas Osei, popularly known as Prophet Kumchacha, has claimed that former Black Stars skipper Asamoah Gyan is a staunch member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Kumchacha alleged that Gyan’s affiliation with the NPP influenced him to deliberately miss the infamous penalty against Uruguay in 2010.

He claimed that Gyan did not want the then party in power, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), to have the glory of Ghana reaching the World Cup semi-finals under their leadership.

“You already know Asamoah Gyan is an NPP member. He has always been an NPP member, that’s why he deliberately missed the penalty in 2010,” he said on United Showbiz while responding to a colleague pundit on Asamoah Gyan’s political affiliation.

“He knew the NDC was in power, so if he had scored, they would’ve taken all the glory. I insist that Asamoah Gyan could have scored that penalty, but he was so consumed with NPP.”

Gyan denied Ghana a historic semi-final berth at the World Cup after he missed a last-minute penalty against Uruguay in 2010. Ghana eventually lost the tie on penalties.

Kumchacha’s allegation was in reaction to Asamoah Gyan disassociating himself from the NPP.

The Black Stars’ all-time top scorer announced his departure from the New Patriotic Party and consequently, the Bawumia campaign team, stating that he is no longer affiliated with any political party.

In a statement issued via his social media handles on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, the former Sunderland man disclosed that henceforth he will be acting as a former footballer and philanthropist.

While Gyan did not disclose the reason for this move, he promised to remain committed to the advancement of the Ghanaian youth and continue to undertake initiatives that would develop the youth.

“I haven’t been fair to the youth and the people of Ghana. Henceforth, I am not affiliated with any political party. I will continue with my humanitarian work and help the youth of Ghana in my own small way. Nothing political. I wish all the political parties a peaceful election on the 7th of December. God bless our homeland Ghana. Thank you,” the caption of the statement reads.
