Information Minister Fatimantu Abubakar presented a report to Parliament on Friday, June 28, 2024, revealing that 43 public institutions were found to be non-compliant with the Right to Information (RTI) Act.
The report, based on a 2023 compliance survey conducted by the Commission, also found that 198 institutions (79.2%) were compliant with the Act.
“The report attributed the non-compliance largely to limited knowledge of the Act among the public institutions,” she said.
Additionally, nine institutions, approximately 3.6% of the sample, required a revisit to assess their compliance status.
The report also detailed the determination of review applications received by the Commission in 2023.
According to her, a total of 92 applications were submitted, with 38 cases (41.3%) resolved through alternative dispute resolution.
Twenty-four applications, representing 26.1%, were processed to the Commission’s decision stage, while two applications, representing 2.2%, were forwarded to the applicants for referral to the relevant institutions.
As of the end of 2023, 28 applications (30.4%) were still undergoing various phases of evaluation, she concluded.
